Description

Victory Village—the parking pad outside the parking garage between Sail and Surf

Join SCAD SERVE to help reclaim supplies donated to the Buzz Bus program. Volunteers will help collect new and gently used art supplies, non-perishable food, cleaning supplies, and other rescued items to give to community agencies such as Americas Second Harvest of Coastal Georgia, Union Mission, Salvation Army, Emmaus House, and Savannah Chatham County Public Schools.

Personal Preparation

  • Three of the four locations are outside so please check the weather in advance and dress appropriately.
  • Please wear your SCAD SERVE T-shirt (if you do not have one, please email slinzey@scad.edu and a shirt will be onsite for you)
  • Wear clothing appropriate for bending, squatting, lifting, etc. including closed toe shoes
  • Please have water, snacks, and sun screen

Logistics

Each site will be open to receive donations from 12:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

  • Wednesday May 31
  • Thursday June 1
  • Friday June 2

Donations

We are accepting:

  • New or gently used art supplies
  • Safely contained cleaning supplies
  • Non-perishable food items
  • Goodwill and Habitat for Humanity are accepting dorm/home décor items

Your Role

  • Please politely accept donations from the student, thank them for their generosity, and wish them a safe and happy summer
  • If their donation is not consistent with the requirements below, please politely thank them for their intention, but inform them that we are not able to accept that specific donation item and they will need to dispose of it elsewhere

Please Note

Art supplies are to be placed in the large grey wheeled bins

  • Art supplies should be of some value, i.e., Fully used sketch pads, nearly empty tubes of paint, hardened brushes, etc. are not acceptable; however sketchpads that are half full and have had the used pages removed slightly used charcoals with ample life remaining, etc. are fine
  • Finished or partly finished pieces of work are not acceptable
  • Open blades (exacto knives, razor blades, etc.) are not acceptable. Scissors, retractable razor knives, or other sharp instruments that can be handled safely with ease are fine
  • Loose items that are not dangerous or messy are acceptable

Cleaning supplies are to be place in the tan 50-gallon barrels

  • New or slightly used cleaning supplies are desired. We will accept items that have value to a shelter, i.e., half bottle of Windex, partially used container of disinfecting wipes, partial roll of paper towels, half full bottle of laundry detergent, etc.
  • We cannot accept any containers of liquid that do not have secure, closable lids—bottle of bleach with saran wrap and rubber band for lid
  • Opened personal hygiene items (deodorant, tooth paste, shampoo/conditioner, etc.) are not acceptable—we will take those items if they are obviously brand-new/unopened

Non-perishable food is to be placed in the America’s second harvest boxes

We cannot accept any

  • Fresh or unpreserved items (meat, produce, diary, breads/grains)
  • Expired items
  • Opened items where food is in contact with open air – can accept an open large package that contains smaller sealed packages (think box of peanut butter crackers from big box store where some of the packs are gone but some remain and are unopened)
  • Items where the ingredients are not written in English – too much risk/liability with food allergies
  • Homemade or self-wrapped items
  • Partially used items (half bottle of ketchup, for example)

Please contact SCAD SERVE Director, Scott Linzey at slinzey@scad.edu if there are any questions or concerns.
