Description

SCAD SERVE Alumni Series — Mariana Alvarez Zubillaga

Direct sun exposure when Ultraviolet (UV) Index scores are 6 or higher can result in sunburn in 20 minutes. The most effective deterrents include wearing SPF 30+ sunscreen, and a wide-brimmed hat. Help protect the homeless from the sun by creating Hats for Humanity!

Inspired by our inaugural SCAD SERVE Alumni Ambassador Mariana Alvarez Zubillaga (B.F.A., fashion, 2018), students, faculty, and staff are invited to create three bucket hats inspired by Zubillaga’s very own fashion brand, Honest Bob.

Register to make three (3) bucket hats for those in need. Basic sewing experience is helpful as a sewing machine is the most effective way to accomplish this goal. If you are in the Savannah area, supplies can be picked up at Eckburg 205, 115 W. Henry St.  If you are in Atlanta, the supplies can be collected at 537, Building A, 1600 Peachtree St. NW.  For volunteers around the world, your supplies will be mailed to you after you register. In the comments section of your registration page, please indicate how you will be collecting your supplies (locally or by mail). If you need supplies mailed to you, please include your mailing address and the estimated number of hats you are committing to construct. This helps indicate the amount of material mailed to you.

The sewing instructions can be accessed here

The pattern can be accessed here.

If you are in Savannah or Atlanta, you may use SCAD facilities and equipment to make hats.

Additional SCAD SERVE Alumni Ambassador events will be hosted on Zoom to complement this in-person event and unite volunteers around the world. These events will be posted on scad.galaxydigital.com

Share your progress with us by emailing photos to scadserve@scad.edu for an opportunity to be featured on social media. Remember to log the time spent on this project for volunteer hours. All submitted volunteer hours must be honest and true.

Once your project is complete, we ask that all products be mailed or delivered to SCAD Savannah or SCAD Atlanta by May 23. Specific mailing addresses and drop-off locations will be updated in this need and sent to registered volunteers.

Thank you for your participation. Your contribution helps make time the sun more comfortable for those in need.
