DESCRIPTION: This volunteer event is only open to faculty and staff. The PIT Count is a one-day, community-wide census of individuals and families experiencing homelessness as required by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development for Continuum's of Care throughout the nation. Volunteers will assist outreach teams by:
-Accompanying trained staff to designated locations where unsheltered individuals may be staying (such as parks, underpasses, and other outdoor areas).
-Engaging respectfully with individuals to ask a short set of survey questions that help us collect demographic and housing information.
-Providing support materials such as resource cards, snacks, or hygiene kits to those we encounter.
Volunteers will not go door-to-door or enter private residences. All activities occur in public spaces and are conducted in pairs or small groups for safety. Training will be provided prior to the count to ensure volunteers feel prepared and understand best practices for engagement. Additionally, along with members of our Street Outreach Team, SPD and CCPD officers will be accompanying each group of volunteers to ensure the safety of volunteers and the individuals volunteers are engaging with.
SCAD TRANSPORTATION NOT PROVIDED.
Volunteer training is required. During training, you’ll learn how to safely and effectively conduct surveys and engage with individuals experiencing homelessness.
Training Location: 7220 Sallie Mood Drive, Savannah, GA
