Annual MATE ROV Competition
Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary and Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation partner with the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center to engage students in learning ocean sciences, technologies, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), in support of the sanctuaries' mission to inspire ocean literacy and conservation through education.
MATE ROV building workshops and competitions prepare students for secondary education and STEM careers, and offer educators training and expertise in applied technologies.
This competition challenges teams of K–12 students to tackle underwater missions, using robots they built themselves while directly applying marine technology skills. Students also learn how to create the necessary sensors, tools, and technologies to monitor the health of aquatic habitats on our Blue Planet.
Marketing Display Judge: Score and judge Marketing Displays per the MATE competition guidelines. Judges will be given the scoresheet prior to the event and a description of scoring criteria. During the competition, Marketing Display Judges will be viewing the team's posters and scoring them based on the scoresheet.

Transportation: You can drive your personal vehicle or transportation from the Hive will be provided. Bus will pickup at 7:30 am for the morning shift and 12:00 pm for the afternoon shift/ Please email SCAD SERVE Fellow, Beth Rooklidge if you plan to take the SCAD bus (brookl20@student.scad.edu).
Attire: Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing, we will be inside a warm and humid indoor pool space. Email SCAD SERVE Fellow, Beth Rooklidge if you need a SCAD SERVE t-shirt.
Instructions for registering as a Volunteer for MATE ROV:
- Head to the MATE ROV website:https://materovcompetition.org/register-regionals/grays-reef
- Scroll down and click on the orange button that reads “volunteer registration", this will open a new tab
- Select (Volunteer) Gray's Reef Southeast Regional
- Select add to cart
- Select continue
- Enter your email address and click next
- It may prompt you to create a password, or if you have volunteered before, it may ask you to sign in
- Fill out information in participants and options
- Under group registration, choose your assigned role
- Click continue. Note DO NOT add the MTS membership selection. This is only for teams that are competing.
- Fill out information in the registration forms section
- Click continue to cart.
- Ensure all info is correct and the total dollar amount is $0.00
- Click complete
