Annual MATE ROV Competition
Gray’s Reef National Marine Sanctuary Foundation partners with the Marine Advanced Technology Education (MATE) Center to engage students in learning ocean sciences, technologies, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), in support of the sanctuaries' mission to inspire ocean literacy and conservation through education. MATE ROV building workshops and competitions prepare students for secondary education and STEM careers, and offer educators training and expertise in applied technologies. This competition challenges teams of K–12 students to tackle underwater missions, using robots they built themselves while directly applying marine technology skills. Students also learn how to create the necessary sensors, tools, and technologies to monitor the health of aquatic habitats on our Blue Planet.
